Amon Tobin – Supermodified

One of the great things about doing this blog is I’m getting to hear lots of good new music all the time. One of the not-so-good things about writing this though is you never have time to go back and re-listen to albums.

I hope not to therefore wait too long until I hear this again. I profess to knowing nothing about this act other than ‘Supermodified’ is a brilliant piece of modern electronica. Lots of different influences here with each track being different to the last. It’s modern but has a timeless quality to it at the same time. Enjoy!

Air – Pocket Symphony

One of Air’s best albums but maybe their least successful? Maybe people thought their bubble had burst with this release but they are wrong (other than the Jarvis Cocker track which is a bit c**p).

It’s the usual amazing production and you just know, underneath all the sweeping electronic sounds they just want to be Mozart. Enjoy!

Dedicated to Martha.

AFX – Analogue Bubblebath

This was Aphex Twin’s first release under the identity ‘AFX’. I don’t know why the name changed for this release and ones in the future but it doesn’t really matter!

More exceptional stuff on this four-track-EP from the man from the south-west. He is consistently great in whatever style he chooses to be. A national treasure even if he wouldn’t want to be considered as one (probably)…

Ellen Allien – Stadtkind

This was Ellen’s first album, released in 2001. Ellen is from Berlin and the album was a tribute to the city after it’s recent unification between east and west.

Anyway the music offered is light tuneful techno which is very very good. Very intelligent and good production is on offer here so give it a go and let yourself into the world of one of Berlin’s finest!

Tim Hecker – An Imaginary Country

Could be argued this album is a very loud Brian Eno piece but I think it’s a bit more than that.

It displays the power of ambient music with it’s sweeping sounds and pure volume. The production is special too. Enjoy!

Royksöpp – Senior

The follow-up to ‘Junior’, ‘Senior’ is definitely the more thoughtful older brother. It is a good listen with thoughtful hooks and some very good bass lines.

Definitely an album to sit back and listen to. If you want something to put on before going out, put on its little brother (‘Junior’). If you want to enjoy some real intelligent dance music, this is your one!

Eat Static – Back to Earth…

I wasn’t too sure what to expect with this when I hit play but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s a great listen with loads of electronic influences, including one track with an Indian flavour (jalfrezi I think!).

I have heard of this band in the past but never really given them a go. I’m glad I have with this album and am off now to find out what else they have done. Enjoy!

Venetian Snares – Hospitality

Not a long album which might be good in a way as an overdose could seriously damage your health!

The best way to describe this artist is to say he’s a “mad Aphex Twin” but that would belittle his own skills.

You should definitely give this a go but I will not be held responsible for what it does to you!

Underworld – Barking

Don’t worry, it’s not ‘barking mad’, it’s just named after where they formed as a band.

Their newest release and can be quite poppy at times. Don’t let this put you off though as it’s still Underworld at heart with their pulsating beats and mixed up random vocals. A treat for autumn!

Autechre – Oversteps

And I’m back…

Their previous albums in my opinion were unintelligible. Sound for the sake of it. I was quite surprised when a friend told me to take a punt on this but I trusted him.

Glad I was too! It’s an absolutely brilliant album and is so on the spot in all it does. Each track flows superbly into the next one and the production is faultless. Turn the lights out and the volume up!
